Choosing between a public speaking course and one-to-one coaching can be confusing. Both promise to improve your confidence and skills, but they work in very different ways.

As a public speaking coach whose run both group courses and coaching programmes for years, I’m often asked: “Which one is actually better?”

The honest answer is: it depends on your goals, budget, and how quickly you want results.

Here’s a clear breakdown to help you decide.

Courses vs Coaching – A Quick Overview

Public Speaking Courses are group-based training workshops (online or in-person). You learn alongside other people, usually following a set curriculum. They tend to be more structured and lower cost.

Public Speaking Coaching is personalised — typically one-to-one or in very small groups. The focus is on your specific challenges, with direct feedback and accountability.

Courses typically suit people who want structure, social learning, and at a lower price point.

Coaching suits those who need personalised attention, and more comprehensive training for help with deeper issues like anxiety or leadership presence.

Public Speaking Courses – What You Need to Know

Public speaking courses are usually one-off workshops, or multi-week programmes. You’ll cover fundamentals such as structure, delivery, body language, and handling nerves.

Timing & Format
Most courses run for 1 day up to 6–8 weeks. They have fixed dates and a set schedule, which can be convenient if the dates/timing match your availability.

Cost
Expect to pay £150–£900 for a one-day workshop or short course.

Pros
– More affordable than coaching.
– Opportunity to learn from watching others.
– Well structured and usually include materials.
– Chance to network with peers.

Cons
– Limited individual feedback.
– Pace is set for the group, not you.
– Won’t help you to prepare for a specific speech.
– Can feel generic if your needs are unique.

Red Flags in Public Speaking Courses
– The trainer spends more time talking than letting participants practise.
– Large group size to trainer ratio (the more people, the less personal attention you’ll get).
– No opportunity for recorded practice and feedback.
– Trainer has little real-world speaking or coaching experience.

At Project Charisma, we run focused 1-day masterclasses covering all the fundamentals, and limited to 6–8 people per course. It’s the ideal “jumping in” point if you struggle with nerves, or lack professional training. (Prices start from £425.)

For companies, we deliver corporate training courses. These combine practical group practice with targeted feedback — a middle ground that’s perfect for teams.

Public Speaking Coaching – What You Need to Know

Coaching is usually delivered as a series of one-to-one sessions (in-person, or online). The coach works directly with you on your specific goals — whether that’s overcoming anxiety, preparing for a big presentation, or developing charismatic leadership presence.

Timing & Format
Some coaches offer single sessions, or longer programmes that run for 12-24 weeks. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes. You often get support between via email or phone.

Cost
UK coaching usually ranges from £1000–£5,000+ depending on the number of sessions, virtual vs. in person, and the coach’s experience.

Pros
– Fully personalised to your needs.
– Detailed, honest feedback on your delivery.
– Accountability and ongoing support.
– Faster progress on deep-seated issues (e.g., anxiety, imposter syndrome).

Cons
– Higher investment
– Requires longer term commitment.
– Fewer opportunities to learn by watching others

Red Flags in Public Speaking Coaching
– The coach promises to “cure” your fears immediately, with no effort on your part.
– No clear structure or programme outline before you start.
– The coach mainly sells you into higher-ticket programmes instead of focusing on your goals
– Lack of real client results or speaking experience from the coach themselves

Our Charismatic Speaker Programme combines 1-to-1 coaching sessions, with group calls, and in-person workshops. It’s designed for professionals & leaders, and offers a comprehensive way to transform your skills and confidence (prices start from £2,000.)

*Due to time constraints, I don’t offer “one off” coaching sessions for people, unless we’ve worked together previously. The only way to work with me 1-to-1 is by joining the programme. We have virtual and face-to-face options.

How to Choose the Right Coach or Trainer

Ask yourself these key questions:
– Do I learn best in a group or with individual attention?
– How quickly do I need to see results?
– What’s my budget and what return am I expecting?
– Do I need help with basic skills or deeper confidence issues?

Green Flags
– The provider offers a clear programme structure
– You get to speak and receive feedback early on
– They have real client testimonials and case studies
– The trainer has proven speaking and coaching experience

Red Flags (General)
Over-the-top guarantees (“Become a paid speaker in 6 weeks!”)
– Pressure to decide immediately
– No opportunity to speak during the sales process
– Vague or missing information about what you’ll actually do

On these red flags… I’ve sat in sales calls myself where this has happened, and it’s such an immediate turn-off. A good coach should feel like you’re mutually finding out if it’s the right fit, not being pressured for your card details.

I’ve also heard horror-stories of people paying huge sums for “big promise” programmes, and being completely disappointed.

With that said, here are some final thoughts…

My Recommendation as a Coach

If you’re just starting out, needing a refresher, or want training at a lower cost, a good public speaking course (like our 1-day masterclass) is an excellent place to begin. You’ll learn a lot in a short space of time, and meet like-minded people.

If you have specific challenges — such as high-stakes presentations, persistent anxiety, or leadership communication needs — then one-to-one coaching will usually deliver better result, and a bigger overall transformation.

Some of my clients end up combining both: starting with the masterclass, then moving into coaching to deepen their training. The most important thing is taking action, because doing nothing keeps the fear in place.

If you’re still unsure, book a call, and I’ll be happy to talk through your options in an open and honest way. If there’s one that fits, I’ll answer any questions and share next steps.

Either way, here’s to getting the help you need.
